A PC isn't designed to run forever, either.

You don't need to use an SD card at all to run an RPi.  I have one 
running 24/7 with a 500Gb SATA HD and no SD, it's been up close to 
three years now.  There's no reason to think that the RPi board 
itself will fail any quicker than a "normal" PC.  I have heat 
sinks on the CPU/GPU and it's cool and stable.
