Flight 161

May 28: The liftoff is confirmed for June 11

Arianespace's third launch of 2003 has been confirmed for June 11,
using a standard Ariane 5G launch vehicle to orbit the dual satellite
payload of Optus and Defence C1, and BSAT-2c.

Preparations for Flight 161 continue on schedule in the Spaceport's
final assembly building for Ariane 5, where the launcher is being
readied to receive the two relay satellites.

Optus and Defence C1 will be launched by Arianespace for Australian
operator Optus and the Australian Department of Defence, while
BSAT-2c will be orbited for Broadcasting Satellite System Corporation
(B-SAT) of Japan within the scope of a turnkey contract with Orbital
Sciences Corporation of the U.S.

In the photo at left, Optus and Defence C1 is mated to its
cone-shaped adapter, which serves as the interface between the
satellite and Flight 161' s Ariane 5.

Optus and Defence C1 was designed, assembled and integrated by
Mitsubishi Electric Corporation of Japan as prime contractor and by
Space Systems Loral (USA) and Raytheon Systems Company (USA) as major

Operating from an orbital slot at 156 degrees East, it will provide
commercial communications services for Australia, New Zealand, East
Asia and Hawaii, as well as dedicated links for the Australian
Department of Defence.

The BSAT-2c spacecraft was built by Orbital Sciences Corporation in
Dulles, Virginia, using a Star-1 platform. This payload will be
positioned at 110 degrees East, and provide direct digital TV
broadcast links throughout Japan over its design life of 10 years.
